Once, when she was a child, she had dreamt that she could fly. It was better than her birthday, better than Christmas. When she'd awakened to find herself still bound by gravity, she had cried. As she grew, she occasionally felt the loss, phantom pain in wings that had never existed.

Years later, she stood at the precipice and reflected on all that had brought her there: the secrecy, the sacrifice, the discipline. As Daedalus painstakingly affixing feathers, she gathered each moment that had shaped her, prepared her for this, and threw herself into the sky.

And flew.
